By Arne Carlsen, Chair-Elect, IACEHOF
From the Golden Age of Adult Education, rooted in social movements, through the development of international Adult Learning and Education, to today’s increasingly prominent understanding of Lifelong Learning within international organizations, the learning of adults has undergone profound changes.
Adult learning has gradually become part of a broader, holistic and systemic framework encompassing learning throughout the life course—from cradle to grave. One might even say today: “I learn, therefore I am,” rather than Descartes’ famous “I think, therefore I am.”
Against this evolving background, the International Adult and Continuing Education Hall of Fame (IACEHOF) reflects on its history and present context as it seeks to renew its purpose and shape its future.
The Hall retains its honorific character, recognizing and celebrating outstanding contributions to adult and continuing education. At the same time, it is exploring how best to preserve and pass on its legacy, support the next generation of leaders, engage with a wider range of international partners, and amplify the voices of adult learners themselves.
After all, lifelong learning is about more than institutions and policies. It is also about the people who create the conditions for learning and the capacity of individuals to take initiative in defining and choosing the continuing learning opportunities that best meet their needs and aspirations.
IACEHOF—with its members, Board, Executive Director and Home Office staff—is therefore renewing the organization and developing a refreshed vision of its role in the next chapter of its history.
As IACEHOF celebrates its 30th anniversary, we can take pride in what it has already achieved, honor the contributions of those who have built its legacy, and look forward with confidence to the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.
My very best wishes to IACEHOF as it embarks on this next chapter—and for many more years of advancing the cause of lifelong learning.
